Planing cross-grain just doesn't really work. Its not a function of how sharp the blade is either, wood just doesn't like to be cut cross grain. One thing you might try is skewing the plane at about 45 degrees to the axis of movement, it usually helps when going cross grain to get a cleaner cut. I need cheaper hobby.
